Best Online Resources for Summer Learning

Almost every student has endured significant disruptions to their classes and extracurricular activities over the past weeks. And while we remain hopeful about life returning to a relatively normal routine sooner than later, chances are high that your summer plans will be impacted as well.

That doesn’t mean that you should ease off the gas pedal of exploring your intellectual passions. Even if you have to engage in different ways than you planned, you can have a meaningful summer experience. Admissions officers will place a premium on students who have taken advantage of this time by exploring new avenues to connect with others or improving their skill sets in areas of focus.

Online learning is a great way to stay sharp and explore topics that may not be available through your high school. By now, many of you are more accustomed to the possibilities of virtual education. But beyond the impromptu systems your high schools may have devised, there is a wealth of resources worth your consideration.

Here are a few of our favorites:

WWP Reading List – There is no substitute for reading a good book. And for students who invest significant time into reading outside of the class, this can be a real asset in their application process. We’ve compiled a list of suggested titles categorized by subject interest. See which ones appeal to you.

EdX  and Coursera – From Shakespeare to Quantum Computing, both of these sites offer amazing online courses presented by Harvard, Penn, UC Berkeley, and many other world-class institutions. You can take your learning to the next level and earn a certificate in certain areas if you choose. And you’ll give yourself a great taste of what college-level expectations will feel like.

Codecademy – Maybe you want to build a website or design a videogame. Codecademy is a great place to learn what you need to achieve all your tech and computer science goals at your own pace. The summer is a great time to dive in.

Khan Academy – Brush up on important skills or fill gaps in your current schedule. Khan Academy is a great free resource to keep your mind sharp and advance academic passions.

Masterclass – Take an acting tutorial with Helen Mirren or a writing course with David Sedaris. Expand your learning with some of the world’s most accomplished performers, thinkers, and creators.

Spend some time investigating the info on these websites and see what, if anything, compels you to learn further. You’ll be well on your way to strengthening your skill set this summer even if your original options aren’t available to you.
