Colleges Begin Adopting Test-Optional Policies in Response to COVID-19 Pandemic

Efforts to contain the spread of the coronavirus have far-flung consequences that filter all the way down through the education system, including the college process. As students try to maintain as much normalcy and routine as they can, we continue to monitor institutional responses to the changing realities of their applicants. One major shift in the landscape is the move of an increasing number of colleges and universities away from standardized testing. With the ACT and College Board canceling their spring exams, rising juniors will have fewer opportunities to master these tests. In some cases, as with the University of California schools, further admissions requirements are being softened in addition to standardized tests.Among other popular institutions adopting temporary test-optional policies are Boston University and Tufts University. Meanwhile, the University of Oregon is using this moment to eliminate standardized tests from their process permanently. It is likely this list will continue to grow throughout the spring and summer. For a full list of test-optional colleges and universities, visit Fair Test.It is more important than ever that high school students experiencing disruption in their schedules or in their access to meaningful enrichment opportunities are mindful of how they actually spend this time.
