Tips for Returning to the Actual Classroom
Tips for Returning to the Actual Classroom
We are excited for all the wonderful possibilities that the new school year brings with it. For some of you, this will mark the return to in-person learning. You’ve already been adjusting to a new normal and, as we continue the slow progression toward post-pandemic life, we have a few pointers to help make that transition as smooth as possible.
Move at your own pace.
Everyone’s readjustment process is different. Don’t judge yourself based on how your friends or peers are doing. Listen to your body and your instinct to determine your own path back to in-person learning.
You may need to ease back into being surrounded by so much stimulation and extracurricular opportunity. Or you may find yourself revved up and overeager to extend yourself. Pay attention to your emotional well-being as you navigate this upcoming semester.
Strengthen your connection to your teachers.
For all the benefits you may have found in virtual learning, there is no replacing face-to-face connections. Make a special effort to visit your teachers’ office hours or find time to check in with them. Even if you don’t feel like you need help or support, take the opportunity to show interest and boost your intellectual curiosity by engaging your teacher on a higher level than most of your peers.
This is especially relevant for all of you rising juniors who will likely need letters of recommendation from your teachers this year. The way they articulate how you readjusted to in-person learning will go a long way in determining how admission officers view you.
Adjust as you go.
There will likely be factors you won’t be able to consider until you experience them that affect how you feel as you proceed through this semester. And you may likely have a sense in your mind about how you expect the semester to play out. Don’t be afraid to adjust your plans as necessary.
Admissions officers expect this to be the case and they will read your file with this in mind. The key will be to tell your authentic story and what you learned from making these adjustments. How are you more college ready? How are you a better leader? How are you more balanced?
Remember, your story is your story. As you return to the classroom, stay true to yourself and what makes sense for your schedule and mental health. As you do, we’re confident you’ll find success and a new sense of normalcy.
