Enrich your filmmaking, screenwriting, computer animation, or film/television business knowledge from the oldest and most prolific film school in the United States. Those wishing to hone their craft or enhance their understanding of filmmaking are invited to apply to any of our class offerings, which cover multiple aspects of the entertainment industry.

Classes are taught by leading industry professionals for six weeks on our state-of-theart campus located in the heart of the entertainment capital of the world. The Summer Program offers production, editing, animation, screenwriting, interactive media, and film and television business classes.

Documentary Filmmaking 

With the widespread success of documentary films such as Three Identical Strangers, An Inconvenient Truth, Free Solo, and March of the Penguins documentary films are making their mark on the big screen and at the box office. Documentary students will gain the necessary skills to successfully create their own original short non-fiction film. Exploration of techniques, methods and styles of the non-fiction film through lectures and demonstrations, as well as, current industry professionals as guest speakers.

Summer programs at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television are every bit as rigorous and rewarding as the classes taught during the regular sessions of the academic year. Held within the same classrooms, theaters, dance studios, soundstages, editing labs and television studios, summer classes are taught by our faculty, many of whom are working professionals in the theater, film and television industries. Courses are offered to current UCLA students, non-students, professionals and high school students for college credit.

Film and Social Change: In Person. Development of documentary and dramatic films in relation to and as force in social development. Letter grading.

Film Editing: Overview of History, Technique, and Practice: In Person. Practical application of film editing techniques, how they have evolved, and continue to evolve. Examination of history of editing, as well as current editing trends, terminology, and workflow. P/NP or letter grading.

Tisch ONLINE HIGH SCHOOL FILMMAKERS WORKSHOP

High school students will work together online with other emerging artists to create and upload skill-building projects, inspired by daily exclusive video lectures. You’ll connect for one-on-one video meetings with your Tisch instructors to get valuable feedback. You’ll develop your writing, directing, shooting, and editing skills to produce a variety of short films — all while taking part in a new form of creative community that is the next wave of film education. In this course, each student will be expected to deliver a crew-based documentary, a crew-based music video, 3 technical assignments, and a final narrative film that they write and direct. TISCH SUMMER HIGH SCHOOL FILMMAKers WORKSHOP

Learn about creative cinematic approaches to visual storytelling. Through hands-on instruction using Tisch’s professional digital cameras and editing workstations, you can see your ideas come alive on screen. The curriculum for the Summer Filmmakers Workshop for High School Students, offered through the Kanbar Institute of Film and Television, is similar to that of the undergraduate degree program. It combines intensive professional training with a comprehensive understanding of the techniques and theories behind the art of cinematic visual storytelling production. Prior experience in film or video is not required.

New York Film Academy Summer Camp

This three-week camp is designed for teens with a passion and interest in non-fiction storytelling. Students receive hands-on training, and no experience in documentary filmmaking is required. The in-person camp is a full-time program held during the summer. While some of our teen programs offer level-two programs, our documentary filmmaking camps are currently available as level one programs only.
