Paleontology
Stones and Bones - UChicago
Join the Field Museum for a four-week intensive practicum in paleontology in Chicago and Wyoming. Go into the field and behind the scenes at the Field Museum to learn how fossils are collected, analyzed, and conserved, as you work alongside museum scientists in the lab and in the field. Stones and Bones gives you a unique opportunity to participate in the paleontological study carried out by the museum.
Stones & Bones is a residential program and requires students to live on-campus, attend classes in person, and also be prepared for outdoor living. Students will spend two weeks of this program tent camping and conducting fieldwork at the dig site in Wyoming. The climate on site is semi-arid desert with daytime temperatures ranging from the upper 60s to upper 90’s (Fahrenheit) and nighttime temperatures occasionally dropping to the mid-30s. There are occasional rainstorms. Students are expected work together with Field Museum scientists to set up camp, prepare group meals, and collect fossil specimens in rugged conditions. Students are not expected to have camped before, but they must be able to adapt and work well with others.
Paleontology Camp - South Dakota School of Mines and Technology
If you are into paleontology enough to work in the field alongside professors and graduate students, then this is the day camp for you. So, roll up your sleeves and get ready to prep, collect, mold, and cast fossils for examination in our state of the art Paleontology Research Lab.
The resources in our James E. Martin Paleontology Research Laboratory makes offering this unique camp possible. You will live on campus and literally walk the path of paleontologists in the Black Hills and Badlands! The curriculum is designed and taught by full-time engineering and science faculty members. You will discuss science and engineering careers with South Dakota Mines faculty members and alumni and visit work sites where you might use your expertise should you decide to take your studies further.
Students will get a chance to assist Mines faculty in fossil collection. Campers' discoveries will be credited and stored in the Mines' collections indefinitely—your very own documented contribution to the study of paleontology!
Sternberg Virtual High School Camp
Sternberg Science Camps are based at the FHSU Sternberg Museum of Natural History in Kansas. We are a non-profit organization pursuing equitable access to exceptional earth and life science education programs for kids and teens. All of our program fees go to program execution, paying our staff, and funding our scholarship program. We use small groups to boost sense of community and increase per-student attention from staff. Our instructors are experts in their fields, with experience and training in education as well as research, field work, and other scientific career paths. Our alumni can be found across the country, pursuing careers in academic research, resource management, science education, industry, and the arts. Many of them even come back to work for us as counselors, teaching assistants, and even instructors.
